Save our Trash Cult
Every now and then you discover something special. A hidden laneway full of amazing artwork, a band who’s music just blows you away, or a cool little dive bar that just has bags of character and is run by awesome people. Well my friends, Trash Cult is that last one there. It’s one of my all time favourite venues and I have been going to see live music for over three decades! Not only is it a brilliant little venue for live music though, it’s also a record and book store, filled to the brim with excellent vinyl and hard to find books. I just can’t speak highly enough of this place!
Hidden away in the Bendigo (Victoria, Australia) suburb of Eaglehawk, the little bar that could has become a staple for lovers of live music, attracting sell-out crowds for every show for both national and international bands alike. That’s right, the fact that Trash Cult can only hold about 50 people as a venue hasn’t stopped it from attracting bands from around the world into diverting what might be a regular old tour schedule taking in the capital cities to specifically come and play in this tiny bar. This means that people who might never have been able to see these music acts, let alone get so up-close-and-personal with them, get a chance to enjoy live music that might previously have been inaccessible for them.
Yet at the moment Trash Cult is under threat, and owners Mick and Lorelle haven’t been able to host any live bands for months, all simply because ONE noise complaining neighbour is holding them back from getting their venue license renewed - even though other larger, noisier bars nearby seem to have gotten their licenses. But for some unknown reason, Bendigo Council has put the breaks on hard from renewing Trash Cult’s venue license, which feels insane given their powerful contribution to the local community.
To put it simply - it’s just outrageous that Bendigo Council would pick on a small business like this!
